Let me back up a bit.
My favourite author for most of my youth and well into my adulthood was Hunter S. Thompson best known for his drug-fueled opus "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." His best book was actually the much less read 'Fear and Loathing on the campaign trail.' regarding the 1972 aerican election. He lived as he wrote, full throttle and not giving a fig for convention or small thinking. He consumed untold quanities of drugs legal and illegal and ran for political office. He shaved off his hair so he could refer to his straightlaced, short back and sides opponent as 'My long haired opponent.'. His writing stayed strong for years until his body started giving up on him. He was confined to a wheelchair for his final few years. He never gave up on two of his major passions Football and Politics. Until on 20th feb 2005 he wrote his suicide note and shot himself in his study.
He would have LOVED to be around to today. Being a child of the sixties he was right in the thick of civil rights movement and seeing an african american taking the reigns of the most powerful nation in the world would have given him untold pleasure.
If only he'd known, I think he would have made a different decision that cold day in Aspen.
And thats why I'm against suicide in general. You never know whats just around the corner.
